Action Team Outreach, Awareness & Education Activities
In addition to providing awareness and education services to the community at large, Action Team members maintain at the core of their mission to insure that every man they care about is thoroughly aware of his prostate cancer risk and what he can do to protect himself and his family.
Outreach 101
Each Action Team member successfully completes the Team’s "train the trainer" workshop. The program allows team members to knowledgeably present prostate cancer specific information to lay persons. Trainees are also qualified to train other lay health advisors.
Action Team members, as a first line advocacy effort and part of their training, commit to insure that their friends and family members are aware of prostate cancer and what they can do to help protect themselves and their loved ones.
On a daily basis, each team member commits to wear either a prostate cancer awareness lapel pin and/or a prostate cancer awareness bracelet. He/she commits to carry on his/her person prostate cancer awareness brochures. When a “teaching moment” arises – often prompted by an individual’s inquiry in reference to the pin or bracelet – the team member takes a moment to explain prostate cancer awareness bullet points to the individual and shares with him/her a prostate cancer awareness brochure. Team members encourage at risk men to be screened for prostate cancer, and encourage all individuals to insure that the men they care about are aware of their risk of developing prostate cancer.
Churches
Religious community leaders are extraordinarily influential when it comes to promoting prostate cancer awareness. The role of clergy is critical. Historically, the pastoral community is responsible for safeguarding the spiritual well-being of his or her congregation as well as guiding and encouraging positive personal decisions in regard to individual emotional and physical well-being. Action Team members commit to work with their spiritual leader to bring awareness to their respective church. Team members approach and engage their clergy in prostate cancer advocacy. Action Team members personally organize and present a prostate cancer awareness breakfast within their church.
Action Team members also work to recruit other local/neighborhood churches to further promote widespread community awareness. The Action Team has established partnerships with several denominations to facilitate the distribution of educational materials:
- African Methodist Episcopal
- African Methodist Episcopal Zion
- Christian Methodist Episcopal
- Church of God in Christ,
- National Baptist
- Missionary Baptist
Action Team members also work with Pastors and other church leaders to make prostate health related announcements at Father’s Day and throughout the month of September (Prostate Cancer Awareness Month) during worship services.
Barbershops
Barbershops and Beauty Salons are historically places of socialization and open/candid conversation. During the Civil Rights Movement, the barbershop served as an informal meeting place to discuss positive community action. Within African-American communities, these facilities are sought out in that they serve a cross-section of the community. Barbershops also function as highly effective outreach centers for sharing community health information. Action Team members work with their barber (or beautician) to promote prostate cancer within their place of business through the distribution of educational materials. An annual Barbershop Saturday event is held each September to promote awareness and education.
Other Networks & Partnerships
Action Team members commit to organize additional workshops, spreading and enforcing prostate cancer awareness throughout their respective communities via fraternities, sororities, civic groups and places of employment. The Action Team has relationships with Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, the Prince Hall Masons, Shriners, Elks, NBLIC, 100 Black Men and strongly encourages and supports educational programs for many other social clubs, block clubs and civic groups. Action Team members are committed to insure that everyone they care about is protected from the devastating impact prostate cancer can have on families and communities.
